State lotteries rely on a combination of big-budget advertising and psychology to keep players coming back for more. In fact, the whole lottery experience\u2014from how the prize is advertised to the math behind the odds\u2014is designed to be addictive.<\/p>\n
Some critics have cast the lottery as \u201ca tax on the stupid,\u201d arguing that people don\u2019t understand how unlikely it is to win and enjoy it anyway. But this argument misses the point.
